Why We Planted Syrah in the Sta. Rita Hills

For most wine lovers, the Sta. Rita Hills is synonymous with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. But for years, we believed another grape deserved a place on our estate vineyard: Syrah.

As a family-owned winery rooted in Santa Barbara County, we've worked with Syrah for much of our twenty-year history. Our winemaking team has long been drawn to the variety's ability to express both power and nuance. Our inaugural vintage, however, represents something entirely new

Planting Syrah here was not the obvious choice. The Sta. Rita Hills AVA is one of California's coolest wine-growing regions, shaped by strong Pacific winds, long growing seasons, and dramatic temperature swings. These conditions make farming challenging, but they also create wines with remarkable tension, structure, and complexity.

Our estate vineyard is farmed using organic and regenerative practices, allowing us to grow fruit that reflects the unique character of this coastal site. The result is a cool-climate Syrah unlike any we've produced before. Vibrant energy, savory complexity, and a sense of place that speaks directly to the Sta. Rita Hills.

One block of the vineyard includes a small amount of co-planted Viognier, inspired by traditional practices in France's Northern Rhône Valley. Fermented together with the Syrah, the Viognier contributes subtle aromatics and additional complexity to the finished wine.

After twenty years of winemaking, new discoveries are rare. Our inaugural vintage represents years of patience, thoughtful farming, and a belief that this site could produce something truly distinctive. It's a wine we're incredibly proud to share and one were excited to keep producing for vintages to come.
