Celebrating 20 Years of Pali Wine Co.

In 2005, my wife, Judy, and I set out on a journey that would shape the next two decades of our lives—establishing Pali Wine Co. The inspiration for Pali came from our deep appreciation for wine and a desire to create something meaningful, something that would stand the test of time. The name itself is a nod to Pacific Palisades, the coastal town where we moved in 1991 and have lived ever since. We raised our two children there. "Pali" is the nickname for Pacific Palisades and we’ve named our wine cuvees after neighborhoods and landmarks in the Palisades such as PCH (for Pacific Coast Highway), Huntington, Riviera, Alphabets, and Bluffs.

Like any new venture, the early years were filled with challenges. Finding the right vineyards to source fruit from, assembling a team, and navigating the complexities of winemaking all required perseverance. One of our biggest initial hurdles was determining our identity—what kind of wines did we want to make, and how would we differentiate ourselves in an ever-growing industry? We decided early on that we wanted to produce site-driven Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, capturing the essence of California’s Central Coast.

Mentorship played a significant role in our foundation. We were fortunate to have guidance from experienced winemakers who generously shared their knowledge. Our first winemaker, Brian Loring, and our long-time consulting winemaker, Kenneth Juhasz, provided invaluable insights. Additionally, we learned from successful and respected winemakers like Adam Lee, Dan Kosta, and Michael Browne. Their expertise helped shape Pali’s philosophy: respect for the land, minimal intervention in the cellar, and a commitment to quality above all else. Our long-time winemaker, Aaron Walker, who has been with us since 2007, also grew in his career alongside Pali, evolving from an eager young winemaker into an industry veteran whose dedication has been instrumental in shaping our wines.

When we first started, our focus was primarily on producing high-quality, small-lot Pinot Noir. Over the years, our approach has evolved, expanding to include a broader range of varietals and a deeper connection to the communities we serve. We aimed to make wines that tasted good right away but could also stand up to aging. What began as a single-minded pursuit of excellence in Pinot Noir has grown into a vibrant, multi-location winery experience with tasting rooms that bring wine lovers together across Southern California.

Value has always been a core goal for us. We want everyone to be able to afford our wines while still experiencing the craftsmanship and quality that define Pali. Reflecting on the last 20 years, we are grateful for the lessons learned, the friendships built, and the wines that have become part of our legacy. Pali has always been about more than just the wine; it’s about the people who make it, the places that inspire it, and the community that enjoys it. As we celebrate our 20th anniversary, we invite you to explore our roots and rediscover the wines that started it all.
